Caribou are the name of the Rangifer tarandus in North America. In Europe and Asia they are known as Reindeer. Woodland caribou are a distinct subspecies from the arctic caribou (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) found in Alaska and northern Canada. The woodland caribou of northern Minnesota became extirpated due to a combination of loss of habitat, predation by wolves and encroachment by deer, which carry a lethal parasite (Parelaphostrongylus tenuis), commonly known as brainworm.
