July 2006 Visitor Numbers
July was a busy, busy month for the BWCAWiki. The Cavity Lake Fire article was by far the most popular draw, thanks mostly to the exhaustive research of BlueCanoe and his vigilance in keeping the article up-to-date.
The numbers
- Unique Visitors: 1217
- Number of visits: 2057
- Pages: 14406
Mid-July Flare-Up
The bulk of those visits came in the second half of July... The draw of the Cavity Lake Fire article is really evidenced there. On July 17, we had 39 unique visitors. On July 18, when news of the fire really started to spread, we had 225 unique visitors. That number only dropped below 100 a couple times in the following two weeks.
Time Spent
Visitors didn't just stop by to read up on the fire, though. While 53% of visitors only spent 0-30 seconds at the site, 21.9% spent anywhere from 5 minutes to more than an hour on the site. The 7 pages/visit number (see above, 14406 pages / 1217 visitors) also speaks to this fact.
Which Door Did They Come in Through?
But yes, those visitors did largely arrive by way of the Cavity Lake Fire article. Specifically, 1105 visitors entered through the fire article, compared to less than 600 by the Main Page. Of all search terms that led to visiting the site, some variation on "cavity lake fire" or "bwcaw fire" or something related made up well over 60%.

Overnight Canoe Trip
It wasn't the BWCAW or anything, but I feel like mentioning that I just took a great little overnight canoe trip on the St. Croix River, my other favorite place. It's amazing that you can have such a near-wilderness experience an hour's drive from St. Paul.
We camped one night at a great site, did some fishing with a little luck on the smallies, and just generally enjoyed getting out.

June 2006 Visitor Numbers
The BWCAWiki recieved 477 unique visitors in June!
Friday has consisently been our busiest day, with an average of 780 page views (compared to a consistent 460-470 on other weekdays and 250-350 on Saturdays and Sundays). Of course, since I tend to do more editing on Fridays than the rest of the week, some of that could be me. :)
Fifty-four percent of our visitors use Firefox. 35 percent use Microsoft Internet Explorer. "Unknown" comes in at 4.7 percent, with Apple's Safari browser coming in at 3.9 percent.
That's about all the useful information I can quickly glean out of our stats logs, but I thought it was interesting...

Freedom of Information Act Request Update
I've been playing some telephone tag with a nice woman from the Superior National Forest regarding my Freedom of Information Act request.
She wants me to cancel the FOIA act because the FOIA is for transparent government and so citizens can monitor the doings of government agencies... Not so citizens can get their hands on any government documents they want (i.e. Forest Service maps and photos). You learn something new every day. Anyway, she seems more than happy to work with me to get me some photos and other materials.

Google Sitemap Completed
I've submitted a Sitemap of the Wiki to Google using the script described here. Hopefully this will improve the BWCAWiki's indexing in Google and placement in search results.
