South Lake is a medium-sized (1,190 acres) lake on the U.S.-Canada border in the eastern BWCAW. It has a maximum depth of 140 feet. Much longer than wide, South Lake is bounded by relatively tall hills, similar to nearby Rose, Gunflint, and Mountain lakes. The historical Height of Land portage, between South and North Lakes, crosses the Laurentian Divide from the Lake Superior watershed to the Hudson Bay watershed.

Because South Lake is oriented approximately east-west and is nearly four miles long, westerly winds can sometimes be severe. A fair amount of snowmobile traffic occurs on this lake in winter, as the Canadian side is open to motorized use and is popular with winter anglers.
