Seagull River
From BWCAWiki
The Seagull River connects Seagull Lake to Saganaga Lake near the end of the Gunflint Trail. The river is more of a series of short rocky rapids than a continuously flowing river.
Course
From the northern part of Seagull Lake, a narrow bedrock constriction creates a smooth drop of several inches which may be paddled in either direction in most water levels. The river pools here around the End of the Trail Campground, and a U.S. Forest Service boat landing for Seagull Lake is located here.
The river then plunges down a unnavigable rapid, losing several feet of elevation over ledges and boulders. This is the only rapid requiring a portage on the river, which may be done through the campground. A flatwater channel leads to the south end of Gull Lake and another Forest Service boat landing.
The northern end of Gull Lake narrows into a flatwater channel, which narrows further at the BWCAW boundary. Through this narrow stretch the water remains flat, although the navigable channel through the many boulders is just wide enough for outfitters' boats, and should be paddled with caution. The channel then opens up into the Saganaga narrows which leads to the rest of Saganaga Lake to the north.
Watershed
The Seagull River collects the tributaries of Seagull Lake, including Alpine Lake, Ogishkemuncie Lake, Agamok Lake, Gabimichigami Lake, and Little Saganaga Lake. The river empties into Saganaga Lake, which itself is part of the larger Maligne River component of the Hudson Bay Watershed.
