Rose Lake

Rose Lake is a medium-sized (1,315 acres) border lake in the eastern BWCAW. It has a maximum depth of 90 feet and contains walleyes, lake trout, and smallmouth bass. Tall bluffs and hills surround the lake, and Stairway Portage passes a beautiful waterfall. There are a number of campsites on Rose Lake.

Routes and connections

Canoe
- 4 rod Rat Portage leads to Rat Lake at the far western end of Rose Lake, and from there on to South Lake, Gunflint Lake, and the Granite River along the Border Route.
- 600+ rod Long Portage leading east to Rove Lake. This portage has recently experienced beaver-related flooding on its west end.
- The Stairway Portage climbs steeply to the south to Duncan Lake and from there West Bearskin Lake, the nearest entry point.
- The Arrow River drains Rose Lake north into the Canadian Crownlands and the large Arrow Lake. This river is a tributary of the Pigeon River.

On foot
- The Border Route Trail passes just south of the lake, first climbing a large bluff, then crossing Stairway Portage, sharing a campsite on the east end of the lake with paddlers, and finally sharing Long Portage.

History
The Voyageurs called Rose Lake Lac Roseau, meaning "reed" or "marsh grass".
There is a sunken rowboat of unknown age off the Stairway Portage landing in 10-20 feet of water which is visible on sunny days.

Natural history
The forests surrounding Rose Lake were significantly damaged during the 1999 Fourth of July Blowdown, particularly the east end of the lake.
