The term Native Americans refers to the indigenous peoples of North and South America. Several groups of Native Americans have been important to the history of the Boundary Waters region. The Sioux people inhabited northern Minnesota until displaced by the Ojibwe in the 1600s. There are Ojibwe communities at Grand Portage and Lac La Croix today. Further north in Canada, the Cree people continue to live on their native lands.
