Fishing
Mulligan is stocked annually with brook trout. The recent illegal introduction of northern pike into the lake has called into doubt Mulligan's future as a stream trout lake, as pike are voracious predators and are known to prey heavily on stocked trout.

Natural history
On the northwestern shore of Mulligan Lake there is a talus slope, an unusual landform in the BWCAW. The forest surrounding the southern half of Mulligan Lake is made up of a relatively large stand of old-growth white pines, rare in the Boundary Waters after logging in the early 1900's and the 1999 blowdown.
