Geography

Lake of the Clouds is one of the highest lakes in the area at 1515 feet above sea level. The lake drains through Cherry Lake and Amoeber Lake into Knife Lake.

Natural history

Because of the lake's small size and great depth, sediment at the bottom of the lake has remained undisturbed, creating a complete paleoclimate record. A sediment core taken from the lake showed over 9,000 annual layers of mud and pollen. This pollen has been examined to determine the history of vegetation changes in the BWCAW since the end of the last ice age.

The forest around Lake of the Clouds was established after wildfire in 1910.
