Ely is a city in St. Louis County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 3,724 at the 2000 census. The city is best known by outsiders as the most popular gateway into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness by way of either the Fernberg Road or the Echo Trail.

Ely is home to the International Wolf Center. The IWC teaches people about the importance of wolves both in Minnesota and the world. Visitors can walk through the center exploring all the exhibits and at the end of the exhibits visitors can come face to face with a pack of wolves that the IWC has year round, one exhibit was designed just for kids so the center has things for all ages. for teachers and education authorities the IWC also rents a traveling
