The Alpine Lake Fire was a lightning-ignited wildfire near the end of the Gunflint Trail in 2005. The fire began on July 30, smoldered until August 8, and then quickly grew during a period of hot, windy weather. The fire was contained by about August 20, at 1335 acres.

Extent

The Alpine Lake Fire burned parts of the shorelines of Alpine Lake, Seagull Lake, Grandpa Lake, and Red Rock Lake. At one point firefighters were concerned the fire would run east towards the numerous cabins and outfitters at the end of the Gunflint Trail, but this was prevented.

This was the first significant wildfire within the 1999 blowdown area. Forests immediately west of the Alpine Lake Fire burned the following summer in the 32,000 acre Cavity Lake Fire.
